Move (port) your number to Vocenya
Updated
In short
Porting moves your business number to Vocenya for good. In the US it usually takes 1 to 2 weeks, and your current carrier must release the number. Forwarding keeps your calls answered while you wait.
In this article
Forwarding keeps your number with your phone company. Porting moves the number itself to Vocenya, so calls (and texts, if your plan includes texting) come straight in and you no longer need the old phone line.
Forwarding or porting?
- Forwarding is quick. You can set it up today and undo it any time. You keep paying your phone company for the line.
- Porting takes longer. Once it is done, the number lives with Vocenya and you can cancel the old line.
Many owners forward first, then port.
How long it takes
In the US, a port usually takes 1 to 2 weeks. Our carrier estimates about 7 business days for a simple port, and 15 business days or more for a complex one (for example, when your current phone company asks for corrections). Your current phone company must release the number, and they confirm the final date.
What you need
Your current phone company checks that the request matches their records, so have these ready:
- The business name and service address on the account, exactly as on your bill.
- Your account number with them.
- Your port-out PIN or passcode, if the line has one. Mobile carriers call it a number transfer PIN.
- A bill from the last 30 days, as a PDF or a clear photo.
How to move your number
In your Vocenya account, open your overview and choose Move your number (or Settings, Phone numbers, Move your number in the Vocenya app). Then:
- Enter the number. We check right away whether it can move. If it can't, you see why, and forwarding keeps working as before.
- Enter the account details as they appear on your bill.
- Read the letter of authorization, which is filled in with your details, and sign it by typing your name and ticking the box.
- Upload your bill.
- Pick a switch-over day from the dates our carrier offers.
- Check everything and send it.
You can follow each step on the same page. We email you when the date is confirmed, if your phone company needs a correction, and when the move is done. A correction (such as a wrong account number) is fixed on the same page and sent again.
Your calls while you wait
Keep forwarding on until the port is finished. Your calls keep reaching your receptionist the whole time.
Don't cancel your old line before the port is done. Cancelling it can release the number for good. Once the move is done, turn forwarding off: it is no longer needed.
